RIHANNA HAS closed down her luxury fashion label only two years after its launch.
The line made history and was the first luxury brand run by a black woman and was the second luxury fashion house started by the French conglomerate LVMH after Christian Lacroix in 1987.
The line was famed for its approach to inclusivity and diversity, and its vibrant, alternative looks across footwear, denim items and eyewear.
The brand has faced problems since the coronavirus pandemic with ongoing supply chains hindrances and with Rihanna being unable to travel to collaborate with her fashion team in Paris.
In October last year, the New York Times reported that LVMH’s chief financial officer, Jean-Jacques Guiony, indicated that the fashion label was having difficulties.
“On Fenty fashion we are obviously still in a launching phase and we have to figure out exactly what is the right offer,” he said.
“It is not something that is easy. We were starting entirely from scratch. Obviously, we have the great help from Rihanna on this, but I would say it’s still a work in progress when it comes to really defining what the offer will be.”
Pricing on some of Rihanna’s items also drew criticism from fans as jeans sold for up to £300.
According to WWD website, net profits for LVMH – the parent company of Dior and Louis Vuitton – saw profits fall by 34% in 2020.
Rihanna’s final collection as part of the luxury brand, a collaboration with the footwear designer Amina Muaddi, was in last November and its last Instagram post was on January 1.
